    Langley Dock Plan:

    Revised UPDATE!   Please read below....

Langley Marina is linear docking. The docking scheme above has been planned by the Harbormaster. We have 300+ ft available to STYC. Most vessels will be tied to the dock. However, when linear space is full on D & E docks, Please be prepared to use your fenders & raft to the outside of STYC vessels already tied.

The STYC point persons:  Lisa & Jeff on s/v Blue Jean's

They will be standing by on VHF #72

Langley Harbormasters office 306-221-1120, VHF ch #66A.

    Pay upon arrival

Make sure to take time to "float" with the returning Gray & Humpback whales of Possession Sound, Port Susan & Gedney/Hat Island. Keep an eye on the 3-4 local Whale spotting vessels, have binoculars scanning the water surface, & remember to respect the parameters of 100 yards distance while out there. Currently there has been Very recent whale activity between Gedney/Hat Island & Port Susan.

Remember:  stay 100 yards away from Gray & Humpback Whales. It is Washington State Law

    Langley Humpback Overnight Cruise

    APRIL 27 & 28

Plan to arrive early up into Possession Sound. Grab your binoculars & point your bow directly toward the eastern shores of Hat/Gedney Island (between Everett & Langley) for a relaxing, casual (and respectful) float with 7 of our native returning grey & humpback whales for a magical afternoon.

There will be a potluck & BYOB happy hour on the outter "D" dock picnic tables at 6 pm. Dinner is your own choice. Make sure to check with local restaurants for their reservation policy's if you plan to eat out. They book fast(!). Later in the evening may include a walk-a-bout up to local Spy Hop watering hole, or perhaps a bit of boat socializing.

    Langley Marina: ch #66A.

    STYC: #72.

Please pay the Marina upon arrival.

STYC is a volunteer run organization and in order to keep putting on the awesome races, we need more volunteers! In an effort to get more Principle Race Officers (PROs) we are having a training seminar to get more racers involved and educated on how our races run. Not only will this give you the opportunity to learn to be a PRO, you will also learn more about the racing rules of sailing…Which will make you a better sailor!

What does a PRO do? They are the "conductor" of our races. They set the course, run the race, and do the scoring.  In our PRO training you will learn how to do all of this! Sound overwhelming? We promise it's easier than it sounds. On the water you will have race committee volunteers as well as a comprehensive Race Committee Checklist.

In this training you will learn:

    • Starting: How to set a start line and start a race - What is included in the start sequence. (classes, flags, horn..)
    • Course Selection: How to select a course using the STYC course selection sheet/tool.

    • The Racing Rules of Sailing: Generically, as they relate to STYC starts and finishes. (over early, barging, collision with committee boat, general recall, etc)

    • Postponements: How to delay/postpone a race when necessary. (No wind!)

    • Finishing: How to shorten course if necessary, score boats as they come in, including method for multiple boats, and how to publish results.

    • Protests: Learn what is needed for a racer to make successful protest and who to contact in the event of a protest.

    • Radio Etiquette: What to say when, to who, and why on the radio.

    • Coast Guard: How and when to contact the coast guard as part of the normal function of racing

    • Emergency Planning: Reviewing the STYC Emergency Plan, discussing how to manage situations, and what emergency services to contact.

The complete training seminar will include class time and on the water instruction. Time on the water will be on the committee boat during our Ballard Cup I & II Series, typically the week following your classroom session. The classroom portion is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours of instruction. On the water time will be assigned after classroom time.

If this sounds interesting to you....Join us on May 19th at the Ballard VFW

If you're registering and aren't a STYC Member, please consider making a donation when you arrive at the event to offset the costs of snacks, beverages, and training materials.

Sloop Tavern Yacht Club is excited to announce our 4th Annual Women at the Helm Race Series. The first in the series is Women at the Helm: Going the Distance, a typical buoy race with the goal of sending racers on a long course to maximize sailing time and fun! This year, after some feedback from 2022; we have allowed ourselves some flexibility in the NoR if wind conditions change on the day of the race, so be sure to check the course at the committee boat that morning.

What makes Women at the Helm different than our other races? This series specifically requires a female-identifying person to helm through the whole race. This doesn't mean only one person can helm; in fact, we encourage crews with several women to rotate through who is at the helm!

Please join us on the marina plaza after the race for awards and a special free raffle sponsored by our local West Marine! All crew members that race will get one ticket and additional tickets will be given to those who helmed, if your whole crew is women, if it's your first time helming a race, if it's your first time racing, and if it's your first time on a sailboat! Please check back here closer to race day for the start time of the award ceremony.

Race entry is free for STYC members and $35 for non-members.
